Stephen Mendel - Trusted Instructor

Los Angeles, California

Stephen began diving in chilly (38 degree F.) fresh water lakes and rivers in Quebec and upstate New York in 1976. He began his scuba teaching career when he endured the grueling 14 week program of the Los Angeles County Underwater Instructor’s Certification Course, boot camp for scuba instructors. He followed that with instructor certifications with NAUI, PADI, YMCA, CMAS (long French acronym which loosely translates as World Underwater Federation) and the Handicapped Scuba Association of America.

He began teaching at the Glendale California YMCA and then became head of instruction at Down You Go Scuba in Monterey Park. From 2003 – 2006 he taught at Reef Seekers Dive Company of Beverly Hills and now spends his time teaching privately and for a select few dive shops in the Los Angeles Area. His base of operations is the heated, indoor, 25 meter pool at the exclusive Los Angeles Athletic Club in downtown L.A.

Stephen has traveled and dived the Bahamas, the Caymans, Belize, Cozumel and Pacific Mexico, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec in Canada, the Florida Keys and Palm Beach area, Hawaii, Vermont and New York in the U.S. and Greece.

Stephen is now an Instructor Trainer with Los Angeles County and NAUI and
teaches all courses from Open Water, Advanced, Rescue, and Divemaster through Assistant Instructor. Specialties include Enriched Air, Dry Suit, Deep Diving, Underwater Digital Photography and others.

Bill Powers - Trusted Instructor

San Diego, California

Bill first learned how to snorkel in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 1982. He promptly fell in love with the ocean and became a scuba diver two years later in Subic Bay, Philippines. Bill continued his love affair with the ocean by traveling worldwide and diving every step of the way. He became a Shark Divemaster in 1996 on Catalina Island, back home in California, and became an instructor in 1995.

Bill has taught hundreds of students in the last five years and proudly emphasizes safety and small class sizes over cutting corners and pushing unprepared students out of the aquatic door. Bill also advocates for the health of the ocean and its denizens... most recently during the on-going, state-level process of creating Marine Protection zones in Southern California.

Location: San Diego county and Southern Orange county (but will travel for special projects).
